Africa’s young pop star has told the world he will release his sophomore album with heartbreaker visuals to “Contour”.
Initially building his career through the support of Mr Eazi and his emPawa program, Joeboy has continued to rise since the release of Somewhere Between Love and Magic back in February 2021. Mr Eazi’s protege is now setting the stage (and building up tension) for a new album due later this year. Joeboy has released a new music video for the single “Contour” as a teaser for the upcoming project.
For the single, the Nigerian afro-pop star has partnered up with longtime collaborator and producer Tempoe, and fellow Nigerian guitarist Kemena. Tempoe and Joeboy had already worked together on his previous single “Sip (Alcohol),” and on CKay’s track “Love, Nwantiti”, in which Joeboy was later featured.
In “Contour”, Joeboy sings about heartbreak but tries to imbue the song with some “feel good” qualities. “A contour is something that’s not straightforward, that’s not symmetrical, not a straight line. This song deals with the contour of a relationship. It’s a heartbreak song, but it’s a ‘feel good’ heartbreak song”, Joeboy further explained. Over a smooth guitar accompaniment, Nigeria’s premier lover boy’s voice resonates.
The latest music video shows him violently dealing with the man responsible for, first seducing the woman he loves, then killing her by accident. Last year, in an interview given to PAM, he had revealed taking inspiration from past experiences of those around him: “I have a lot of empathy so when I sing songs people mostly think I’m singing about myself, but it’s just someone else’s story.” Here’s to hoping this tragic story is pure fiction.
